It’s been a rough few weeks for California’s Democrat Governor after he wasn’t considered as Joe Biden’s replacement or Kamala Harris’ running mate.
And now these California residents are fighting to succeed from Gavin Newsom’s left-wing hellscape.
But not in the way you think.
Can a CalExit ever happen?
Since 2015, there’s been a movement inside California to make the Golden State its own state.Â
If the CalExit movement were to succeed, Democrats would lose 54 electoral college votes that are practically guaranteed to them.Â
Additionally, Democrats would lose 40 current Congressional seats, compared to just 12 seats for the GOP.Â
That would shift the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives by 28 votes toward the Republican Party.Â
However, in almost a decade, the CalExit movement hasn’t gained much ground and has even twice restructured.Â
But there’s now a new movement afoot in Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom’s state that wouldn’t remove the state from the nation, but ration a large county from the state.Â
San Bernardino County to declare independence from California?
A land developer in San Bernardino County, California is sick of Democrats running the biggest state in the union into the ground.Â
Two-years ago, Jeff Burum from Rancho Cucamonga, convinced 52% of votes in his county to force the county commission to issue a study on the possibility of the county seceding from the state.Â
But ABC 7 Eyewitness News out of Los Angeles is reporting the study has finally concluded and it’s not what Burum was hoping to read.Â
According to CalMatters, one of Burum’s arguments for breaking away was that San Bernardino County wasn’t getting its proper share of resources from the state.Â
However, the study found San Bernardino County receives 9% more state funding per person than other counties statewide.
Because of that, the LA ABC affiliate reported the study concluded seceding would be “unnecessary” and “unlikely.” Â
A tale of two Californias
However, distribution of resources was hardly Burum’s only argument for San Bernardino County independence.Â
The CalMatters article cited the state’s radical Left legislation in comparison to the citizenship of the county as another reason.Â
In 2020, San Bernardino County voted for Joe Biden over Donald Trump by a 10-point margin.Â
That sounds like a lot until you consider that thanks to the dark blue California coast, the state voted for Biden by 29-points.Â
That means the central county is three-times more conservative than the state as a whole.Â
Burum also argued that the state government has simply grown too large to be controlled.Â
“Government shouldn’t be an organic growing creature. It wasn’t ever really designed to be that. Government was created to protect us,” Burum said. “That’s become the largest weed in the garden. Now it’s bigger than the trees. That’s what governments become in our country. That’s what it is in our state. Listen, that’s not what we were intended to be.”
Finding the silver liningÂ
But the independence movement for the county featuring 20,000 square feet and 2.2 million residents isn’t over just yet.Â
Burum acknowledged to CalMatters that he knows there have been 220 failed independence movements in California history.Â
“I’m never going to be deterred based on other people’s beliefs,” Burum said. “If you can see a path to get there, then for the betterment of mankind, you need to pursue it.”
And Burum isn’t alone.Â
Fourth District Supervisor Curt Hagman actually found a silver lining in the study.Â
Hageman noted to ABC 7 that the study did, indeed, find that San Bernardino County receives its rightful amount of funding in at least 50% of areas.Â
However, he noted there were several categories, including community colleges, low-income housing and the homeless crisis, where the county was underfunded due to certain state allotment rules.Â
“Even though we’re the sixth largest (county) in California by population, we’re not getting that because we don’t have a city with more than 300,000 in it,” Hageman said. “So, now we’re armed with information to go to our state representatives and say, ‘Hey, maybe it’s time for this formula to be updated for the modern current time period.'”
