The federal government has become so bloated that the average American could not tell you what most federal agencies even do.

There is a reason why cynics refer to Washington D.C. as the Swamp – everything in the city seems to be a morass that costs taxpayers trillions with little to no return on their investment.

But Ron DeSantis left everyone stunned after he made one unprecedented promise that will make conservatives stand up and cheer.

Democrats are biting their nails at the prospect of a slimmed-down federal government

Few Americans believe the federal government is too small, and most couldn’t even name more than a couple of cabinet positions anyway.

Under the watch of former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, the federal government ballooned in size, taking trillions of Americans’ tax dollars without any return on investment.

With the 2024 election cycle in full swing, many candidates, almost exclusively Republican candidates, are promising to make the federal government more slimmed down and efficient.

On Wednesday’s broadcast of Fox News’ The Story, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis outlined his plan to significantly slim down the federal government should he be elected President in 2024.

“Are you in favor of eliminating any agencies?” host Martha MacCallum asked. “I know conservatives in the past have talked about closing the Department of Education. Would you do that?”

“So, we would do Education, we would do Commerce, we’d do Energy, and we would do IRS,” DeSantis replied. “And so, if Congress will work with me on doing that, we’ll be able to reduce the size and scope of government.”

“But what I’m also going to do, Martha, is be prepared if Congress won’t go that far, I’m going to use those agencies to push back against woke ideology and against the leftism that we see creeping into all institutions of American life,” he added. “So, for example, with the Department of Education, we reverse all the transgender sports stuff, women’s sports should be protected. We reverse policies trying to inject the curriculum into our schools.”

“That will all be gone,” he continued. “We will make sure we have an accreditation system for higher ed., which is not trying to foment more things like DEI and CRT. So, we’ll be prepared to do both. Either way, it’ll be a win for conservatives.”

History shows that talk is cheap when it comes to campaign promises

Although DeSantis’ pledges to shut down several bloated and wasteful agencies within the federal government are encouraging, similar pledges have been made before to no avail.

Nevertheless, eliminating agencies like the Department of Education, Commerce, and Energy would be a major step in the right direction toward slimming down the federal government.
