Cries from the “Do Something” Democrats are growing louder by the day following recent and tragic mass murders in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York.
But it appears “do something” doesn’t include common-sense policies that could actually help prevent school shootings.
And now President Joe Biden is crossing his fingers and hoping you don’t see these new findings about armed teachers.
Democrats never let a crisis go to waste
“Congress needs to act so we can have federal legislation on the books, so we can stop this epidemic we’re seeing across the country,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a recent press briefing.
The comments come on the heels of the school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 children dead, along with two teachers.
It was the deadliest school shooting since 2012 – suggesting, while incredibly sad and tragic, it’s not exactly an epidemic – when 26 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Since then, Democrats have been screaming, “do something, anything, even if it doesn’t work, do something.”
Of course, by “do something,” the gun-grabbing Left means, ban guns and repeal Americans’ Second Amendment rights.
“The idea that an 18-year-old kid can walk into a gun store and buy two assault weapons is just wrong,” President Biden said.
He didn’t elaborate on either, what is wrong with that idea, or what an assault weapon is.
An assault rifle is a specific, typically military-issued, firearm.
An “assault weapon” is a phrase the Left has crafted to try and confuse the issue.
According to Jean-Pierre, President Biden supports increasing the age of buying a gun to 21 – despite the fact that 18-year-olds can join the military and receive firearm training.
The new White House Press Secretary also said the President is in favor of banning so-called “assault weapons,” –whatever they are – and banning supposed “high-capacity magazines.”
Considering the Uvalde school shooter was inside the school for more than an hour, he would have had plenty of time to switch low-capacity magazines many times – so, again, it’s a policy that would rob Americans of their rights without having any impact on mitigating school shootings.
Facts are stubborn things
However, new findings suggest there is something we can do – arm trained and willing teachers.
There are 20 states currently that allow teachers to be armed in the classroom.
According to the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), there hasn’t been a single person killed in a school that allows some specific teachers to carry a gun in class.
Zero.
Furthermore, criminals don’t seem to be paying attention to the “gun free zone,” signs outside of schools.
However, not knowing if a teacher is armed in one of the classrooms does appear to be a deterrent.
The fact is, one school district in Uvalde, Utopia Independent School District, allows some teachers to carry a firearm in the classroom.
Robb Elementary School is not in that district.
Democrats like to play fast and loose with the truth
The argument the Left makes against arming some teachers is that it is unsafe and could cause more problems that it solves.
The zero deaths in those schools during school hours seems to suggest it is at least a partial solution, but does their claim of “causing more problems” hold water?
The CPRC report shows, in the past eight years – across all 20 of those states – there has been exactly one shooting incident in schools that allow armed teachers.
“Only one accidental discharge by a permit holder on K-12 property occurred,” A CPRC study found. “It occurred in Utah in November 2014 and resulted in only a very minor injury. A teacher discharged her gun in a faculty bathroom after school hours, and she was slightly injured when fragments from the toilet struck her. A few other accidents have occurred during firearm training classes held outside of school hours. There has never been a case of a student getting a hold of a teacher’s or school staffer’s gun.”
So, why is President Joe Biden and his fellow gun-grabbing Democrats so hell-bent on taking away your guns, when a far more reasonable “do something” answer is on the table?
