Corporations across the nation have made it clear in recent years that they don’t really value their customer base.

They continue to make moves that are in the complete opposite direction of what customers are looking for.

But now Costco has made one major change that has its members ready to revolt.

Costco’s MAJOR change

Hot and fresh rotisserie chicken is one of Costco’s most popular items, but now, some customers are unhappy after the retailer changed the packaging.

The chickens were packaged in plastic clamshell containers, but they’re now being sold in plastic food service bags with a Ziploc-style opening at the top.

Costco started making the change in March 2024, and has gradually made the move to every store in the US, according to Consumer Reports.

The June 2024 edition of Costco Connections, the retailer’s magazine, included information about why the switch would help to save millions of pounds of plastic waste each year.

“You may have noticed a classic Costco item in a different container: Kirkland Signature Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken now comes in a bag,” said the retailer.

The company also said the new packaging “will save an estimated 17 million pounds of plastic every year,” noting that the numbers were “based on projected rotisserie chicken sales in 2024.”

“The bag also takes less space to transport; one pallet of the new bags is equivalent to five pallets of the old packaging, so Costco can remove 1,000 of its freight trucks from the road each year. The use of fewer transportation vehicles will eliminate over 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually,” said Costco.

However, many customers have expressed their unhappiness over the new packaging on social media.

Several people said the new bags are inferior when compared to the more rigid clamshell design.

Business writer Trung Phan wrote on X that “this was a rare Costco L TBH.”

He said the bags are very leaky and aren’t as good for storing leftovers, while also making it harder for customers to “pick out good chickens.”

Another X user said the bags were leaky, writing, “Your new roast chicken bags leak like crazy. [The] whole trunk was soaked by the time I got home. Two bags both leaking.”

Costco members take to Reddit

X isn’t the only social media platform that Costco members are using to complain about the new packaging.

The r/Costco subreddit is filled with complaints about the bags.

One Reddit user posted a picture of a leaking rotisserie bag sitting on a store shelf, adding, “New rotisserie chicken packaging looks prone to leaks.”

Several more Reddit users said the new bags were not recyclable in their respective cities, but the clamshell containers were.

“Unfortunately, at least in my area, the bags are not eligible for curbside recycling. As a result, most of them will go to the landfill,” said one user, noting that the change is a “leap backwards in my book.”

The famous chicken is a popular item at Costco with a price tag of $4.99.

The retailer sold 137 million chickens in 2023, an increase of 20 million over the previous year.
